Comment Friday for July 20th
Comment Friday is up on time this week! Hooray for that!
Since we have quite a few new readers let me tell you what Comment Friday is.
Comment Friday is a fun and simple idea. Just leave us a comment about the topic I mention, or really anything you want. From there we can get a great discussion going.
Each week we will chose one lucky commenter to be featured as our Blog of the Week and that blogger will get a permanent link to their blog in a post and a spot on our blog roll for the week.
Sound good? Those are the stakes and here is the topic. This week I am interested in hearing about what brings you the most traffic. Blog about your Blog has been trying to find ways to increase website traffic and I want to see what works for you.
Have something else on your mind? We want to hear that too!

I haven’t really examined my stats so I don’t really have anything to contribute. Besides I don’t have much traffic to speak of but I’m interested to know how others do it.

The thing that brings the most traffic to my blog is people’s innate desire to worship a royal siamese prince. We all have the need to idolise and admire something and I provide the perfect opportunity for this. I am truely stunning.

For me the best traffic source I have is Google, it probably accounts for over 65% of my inbound traffic, it also helps that the site is well ranked for our niche keywords. We also gain a decent amount of traffic from social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, but due to the nature of the site this is expected. Due to the recent success of our site we are now linked by the BBC for all local hip hop events, which can’t be bad!

Howdy, the post is up and you’ve been linked. What or what site? MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog seems to bring in the most for me. My Tues and Thursday giveaways drives the most traffic to my site, after that it is Harry Potter.

Most of the hits from actual people I’m getting these days are coming from search engines, as my blog is getting older there’s definitely a great increase to be seen on that on a wide variety of search terms.
Asides from that incoming from other blogs and such also is to be seen.

I think that most people come to my blog by mistake haha. Sometimes I get lucky and they become regulars. Other times, I get traffic surges whenever people stumble my posts.

Google mainly, then Blog Explosion. However, there were around 300 people came to my blog in one day about 2 weeks ago through Stumbles Upon, which was cool.

First time Comment Friday participant here.
My biggest traffic sources seem to come from Ask and Google.
The article that gets by far the most traffic is one I wrote in mid-May about a huge influx of jellyfish coming to Oahu. (It was more of a public service announcement. Not exactly an article that makes you want to “Go Visit Hawaii” :|) ) The article ended up being on the front page of digg and crashed my site. Anyway, I get traffic almost every day from that post.
Images can be a great traffic generator. At one point I had some images that were “SEO optimized”. This was all accidental, by the way. I soon figured out that people were only looking to rip off my photos and had no interest in the rest of the site. So, I took off the photo descriptions. Though it hurt my traffic in the short term, I was glad that the traffic I had in the mean time was traffic focused on the content.

StumbleUpon has been a real boon for me lately.
One thing I’ve noticed is that my 404 page is getting nearly 7% of my site’s traffic. Should be concerned or is that figure in line with what most of you see on your sites?

I find posting regularly and often is the most effective way of generating hits. In weeks that I don’t post there is a huge drop then in the weeks that I post at least once a day or even twice the hits just mount up.
Commenting on other blogs seems to be a big draw card too.

Other than one day when my site got Stumbled, most of my traffic comes from Technorati searches, with Google searches following as a close second. Some things are topic-dependent, too; almost all traffic to my Live Search Club posts comes from (appropriately enough) Live Search.

I am getting nice traffic when stumble (StumbleUpon) my post, but then again, I think we are not allowed to stumble our own sites daily…
And of course one more good thing is browsing other blogs and leave comments…
Ah, almost forgot to say – I bought Sponsored listing form my blog on BlogCatalogs – that worked fine too πJuly 20th, 2007 at 7:31 am -

I get most of my traffic via MyBlogLog. I’ve met some really great people through this program, and see new “faces” everyday.
I’m also finding that between my 2 blogs, my “fun” one gets much more traffic than my “work” one. It seems that people would rather come hang out when I’m cutting loose, than when I’m being “professional” and business-like.

Since I just keep a personal blog, most of my traffic comes from people searching Google and linking to something I wrote.
Of course, I get clicks from friends’ blogs who link to me as well.

Most my people come to my site directly (like from an e-mail I sent or from there bookmarks). After that from google. I also get a lot from linkreferral and MyBlogLog. After that is all the comments that I leave on sites that I enjoy reading.

The thing that brings me the most real traffic (visitors that might actually become readers) is commenting on other blogs.

Well, I know it’s a huge, but I really haven’t taken the time lately to check how folks are getting there.
I’ve been hearing things about Google Analytics (perhaps I even read about it here at BAYB) that make it sound like I need it, but I haven’t had the time to check that out either.
If you haven’t covered “how to find out where your traffic is coming from” as a topic here, it might be a very useful post; I’m sure knowing that is an important first step toward increasing your traffic, right?
All that said, what seems to have worked in generating the most exposure for my blog, hands down, is BlogCatalog. I signed up there and had a huge spike in my email from the git-go. That settled down after a little while and I thought “Well, that’s over”, but nope. I may have slowed, but I have a constant stream of mail from them still about people adding me as a friend or adding my blog to their neighborhood. Definitely the most notable thing I done.
In second place, however, is getting involved in the Thursday Thirteen (AKA: T13) meme. Lot’s of cross traffic there for me, but that might really be incidental to my visiting all the other T13ers out there and leaving comments.
As per a post here a while back, I always try to make my comments stand out, now!
Sorry I’ve “gone all novelist” on you all of a sudden!
Oh, and yeah, my TGI(C)F (Thank God It’s (Comment) Friday) is up!

My traffic comes from multiple sources. Right now, most of it is a result of commenting on other blogs on a regular basis. I also get occasional clicks from ezine articles, BlogCatalog, and Digg.
My traffic picked up even more after I started writing longer, detailed articles about specific web and blogging tools.

And that next to the last sentence in the paragraph about BlogCatalog should begin “It may have slowed”, not “I may have slowed” (no matter the truth of the latter!)
Also: It’s too early for me to tell the effect of StumbleUpon.
Last thing: I’m currently involved in a Battle of the Blogs at BlogExplosion. If you’re coming to visit my CF anyway, why not come through there and vote (for me if you wish, I won’t beg!)

Well, after being dugg yesterday my answer is slightly different! π
Normally my biggest number of visitors comes when I have a post that gets Stumbled and other than that it is a close tie between organic search results and people being referred from other sites in the community.
BTW, I am running a contest with a few little prizes for 3 lucky winners as a thanks to everyone for being dugg.

Wow.. great to see an active Comment Friday again. StumbleUpon has been my greatest friend so far. Google brings about 10% of my traffic but I think I should spend some time optimizing my site so googe can find more useful things people are searching for.

At least for me, GOOGLE gives me a ton of traffic from people looking for anything green tea, just because that happens to be my site’s title. Besides that though, Blogexplosion and Blogmad give a ton of traffic, but nothing beats the traffic you get when you comment on other peoples’ blogs.

I’m starting to get a lot of traffic from Google – both with regular searches and their image search facility – especially after posting about a recent event, like the MotoGP race I went to the other week.
Other than that, I get a lot of hits from Blog Explosion, but you obviously have to work (gain credits) to get those hits so maybe thats cheating.
