Comment Friday for September 21st
Another Friday so soon. This week involved emergency room visits and early morning breakfasts, that I wasn’t awake for.
If this is your first comment friday, the idea is pretty simple. Leave us a comment about anything you want. I will select one lucky commentor that really stands out, and I will be giving out a free link to that person. In addition to that that, I will be giving them a free blogroll spot.
This week I’m interested in what you think about contests. Have you hosted a blog contest on your blog? If so, what area did you target, such as more links, more rss subscribers etc. Who is looking to start a new contest. We just finished our technorati 5,000 contest which we did very well in and I will be announcing a winner soon.

I’ve never run a contest on my blog, although I like the idea of doing so as a traffic/subscriber booster…

Matt – I hope you are ok….I had noticed you had been kind of quiet this week.
Regarding Comment Friday’s Topic:
I ran my first contest that finished up Aug 31st. The articles that BAYB wrote were really an inspiration for the contest.
The contest focused on rewarding my readers, increasing RSS, and if possible a few links. All objectives were met. Another thing I noticed along the way, is that comments starting picking up at the same time.
The contest was a lot more fun to do than I anticipated. I’m awaiting the delivery of one item to announce my next contest. I hope to be announcing it next week.

I have been thinking of running a contest myself! I think I need to do that to bump my RSS subscribers to over 200 (hovering just under it). 🙂
Plus, I am sure it is a lot of fun from what I hear from you guys!

I have never run a contest on my blog. I have thought about it but have not been able to find a good source for any of the laws involved. Do you usually keep the contests to the US only?

Thanks for your concern, actually it was my girlfriend who hasn’t been feeling well. She’s been really stressed out with everything and hasn’t been feeling well. We spent all of wednesday night, from 7:30pm to almost 1am in the emergency room, mostly waiting.

And don’t worry about it my email is always open to anyone 🙂
Contests are great and promoted and marketed right can really help. After a few of our contests + comment friday we get tons of comments, it’s great. (There are currently 539 posts and 2,939 comments, contained within 21 categories.)
Chester, generally I keep my contests to US only if I’m shipping a prize. However, we have been able to run a few contests where we included Canada.

Hello Matt. I love contests I’ve won a couple,(yours and blggrrls). Plus I’m having one right now.
I’m giving away a new video ipod nano and the response has been amazing. My goal was to increase site awareness and get some back links.
Goal achieved. One thing I’ve noticed that administering a contest is a little tricky. I tried to make the instructions as simple as possible. And yet I encountered some issues.
One person posted in a forum. So I had to specify the links needed to be in a blog. Also some people only gave me one link or didn’t give me a URL so I could find their contest post.
But I’ve been adding additional info and trying to let everyone know what’s required to make it as fair as possible.
The backlinks and the buzz created are well worth the cost of a nano. My contest doesn’t end until October 31st, so I’m sure entrants will continue to trickle in.
At the end it will probably take me hours to create the final list of entrants and draw the random number. Worldwide shipping will be interesting too.
I’ll definitely have another contest, my next one will probably be a little more structured and focus on increasing subscribers.
Glad your feeling better, Emma

Being a author here now has let me see a few more contests. I subscribe to several blogs about contests, and participate in all that I can. I hope to start a new contest soon for those bloggers who need some extra exposure(hint: It’s all about PayPerPost), so stay tuned. 🙂

Hey Matthew, thanks for this opp. I’ll be posting a giveaway on my site tonight so please stop by everyone, at least those that like free stuff. I think they are great for the site that is hosting the giveaway and if it is for a sponsored giveaway it’s great publicity for them as well if done properly.

Hey, matt: hope your girl is better.
As for contests, as you know i ran my first just this week and it went super well. Had a ton of comments (close to 30) and my goal was additional backlinks, which i got a nice dozen or so. All in all, im glad i did it, and thanxs again for sponsoring a prize. In fact, the winner who i annouced earlier today, wants your prize, the 1 month link on BAYB. hehe.
I will definitely do another contest, and will stick with the photo-caption but with a twist.
Happy Friday!

I am just gonna copy and paste this over here from another blog that was asking this same question today.
I have won quite a few blog contests… I’m addicted to the contests! I have won books and more books, MomAgenda Kitchen Folio and Daily Planner, American Idol DVD game, t-shirts, hats, One2Believe Jesus doll, $50 g.c to Olive Kids, $50 g.c to Kind Living Designs, ad space, scrapbook stuff, Starbucks g.c., vintage table cloth, dress for my littlest girl, hair bows for my two youngest girls, no purse sew kit, candy dish, a necklace, dvds, a reversible car seat cover, and the list goes on and on.
All aforementioned items were won since July of this year… started with the Dogs Days of Summer Giveaways.
I scout out the contests/giveaways daily and post a daily Edition of Contests Galore on my blog (a contest roundup with the majority of contests listed being NEW ones). My blog: Laura Williams’ Musings http://laurawilliamsmusings.blogspot.com I also post reviews, daily life snippets and more in addition to the daily contest roundups.
Right now, I am also running my own giveaway (my first ever sponsored one).. If you scrapbook you may be highly interested… if you don’t check it out to.. you still may want this item.

I’ve heard of this thing you call “contests” (Remember Caveman Lawyer on SNL — “Your world frightens and confuses me” that’s who I feel like right now) but am just getting into the actual marketing of my blog. It’s amazing to me how people respond to the word “free;” it really is an action packed word.
But I digress, I have not run a contest, I wasn’t aware that there were rules about keeping it contained to the United States. However, I just considered Jennifer’s idea of M&Ms and the cost of mailing a bag of them to Kuala Lumpur from the Motor City. Good advice.
p.s. Found you through a link from The Secret of Life.
