Linking To And From Digital Point Could Be Bad for SEO

Digital Point is a massive webmaster related forum. There are thousands of users that log on daily to discuss different ways to make money online, as well as being able to buy and sell links. I’ve been able to make thousands of dollars just using Digital Point alone.

With that being said, using the site itself to get links, may not be the best idea.

It is a massive forum, meaning there are tons of members. Due to it being so big, some users abuse it. You can’t stumble your own Digital Point threads since it is banned from Stumbleupon. Linking to your website, blog, or article from Digital Point may also give you penalties in Google.

De-Ranked from Google

When we had our trouble with NeverBlueAds (which is now resolved) I, of course, posted about it. That post ended up ranking on page 1 in Google for the term NeverBlueAds.

I found a thread on Digital Point discussing NeverBlueAds so I put in my two cents and linked to my article. Soon after that I realized my traffic from Digital Point was increasing but the search traffic for NeverBlueAds went down. After Googling it, I found the post was no longer ranked on page 1. Going a bit deeper I found I couldn’t find the post at all.

Figuring Digital Point may be the culprit, I tried to edit my post to remove the link. However you can’t seem to edit links that old, so I had to change the URL of the post all together. Within the next few days the post was back where it belonged, on page 1.

Linking to Digital Point?

I’m not sure what the affects could be for linking to Digital Point, however I make sure to no follow links, just in case.

Have you noticed this too with your posts? Several of our other posts have been affected due to links from DP

I have not noticed that problem with linking from DigitalPoint, but it would not surprise me. There has been an increasing number of spam problems (IMHO) at DP and perhaps Google is being a little more selective about what ranks well from there.

I’ve seen this question asked before. and before, I linked to digital point, with no problem.

I’d wager your site would need to trip more than one factor (one link to DP) for it to be removed.

This could be because of different DCs, fresh content boost etc.

Its not so much linking TO it’s linking FROM. The odd thing is that it has happened to all the articles that I linked to from DP.

Would this have effects on sites linking in a signature line? Do they even allow signature lines?

Hmm… this was definitely interesting because I do occasionally link some of my posts in DP forums… but I never really noticed if it affected my SEO stuff.

I guess I’ll have to pay more attention to it.

They do allow signature lines and I don’t know the effect it might have. However I’ve removed all of mine just in case.

It’s so lovely to have such nice abusers ruin good deals, ain’t it?

I’ve noticed this also.. I’ve written two or three posts in which I’ve linked to DP, and I noticed these posts have done horribly in Google, etc. But when I remove the link to DP, all is better.

I haven’t noticed about links FROM DP, but I’m sure it’s also true. Except what do you do when someone ELSE links to your posts? There’s nothing you can do.

If you notice it, I assume you could ask for it to be removed…possibly?
