Writing a great blog post title.
I’m so guilty of this. Very often I will write a great blog post and put some vague title that doesn’t really sum up the content and won’t drive readers to take the time to read the rest of the article.
The reason why so much emphasis in on headlines in newspapers is because it is these attention grabbers that will get your readers hooked on what you are actually saying.
Take my heading on this post – pretty boring and straight to the point. Yes this is what the topic is and you will probably know what it’s about already. But are you excited about it? Does it conjure anything up in your mind? Ironically by illustrating this point it’s very possible I have lost some readers immediately!
Try taking a little extra time thinking about your title. Over at Copyblogger.com they even suggest to write the title first.
Giving a little more thought to my topic title try this one (I’ll pop it in bold to try and catch some wandering eyes!)
Get more people reading your posts by using great titles.Â
There. Not going to burn up the world but it will create a little more interest to someone reading the headings in their RSS.

I have another problem. I have a great title to a post that is nothing more than pointless drivel. It’s not a random thing either – it’s every damn post…
How do I fix this?
That was some good advice though.

Having a really good title will also help in the search engines, according to an article I read the other day. It also went on to say that some major news organizations are actually retraining some of their news staff to write headlines that are optimized for search engines.

Some bloggers say that you shouldn’t bother with keywords but it’s a valid point made that if you are targeting the keywords that matter most to your readers then you’ll be addressing what they want to read.

there is a basic difference between writing an seo article and a blogpost.
A blogpost must have a personal flavour to it even in the title! in fact the key phrase can do just well if you use them in the tag! I am not saying that you should not use key phrases in the title, but you should not make the title tag a bunch of key phrases, signifying nothing!February 15th, 2007 at 11:35 pm -

Hi Roy – with the keywords thing what I’m trying to say there is that if you write about comic book characters and you want to increase your readership you should take a look at the keywords that are currently popular in comic book searches.
Say for example I’m writing a post about Batman and the current hot keywords associated with Batman is batcave. Well then I may try and incorporate that into the heading (only if it is relevant of course). Something like ‘there’s something rotten in the batcave’. It just gives my post a little more chance of getting seen.
But you are completely right you can’t just throw keywords randomly at a heading and hope that it sticks!!

hello Lee,
i didn’t cross you! I completely agree with you in this issue! But don’t you think that there is a little bit of difference on how you market a blog!
You can easily get a good rank there at yahoo or msn, by using key phrases in the title, but thats not so easy with google, even in the blog search page!
what people normally do is that they incorporate indefinite number of items and issues in a single blog! Unnecessary!
If your blog is topic specific, than there is hardly much to worry about key phrases, they are bound to come on their own!

LOL Roy I think we definitely are on the same page!!! Again you certainly are right in regards to a focused blog being a lot more successful (traffic wise) than one that tries to grab various subjects.
