Comment Friday For June 15th

We are sitting at about 20-25 comments per week on our Comment Fridays, and I’m ready to increase that number!

If this is your first comment friday, it is a fun and simple idea. Just leave us a comment about anything you want, and we can get our own little discussion going.

Each week we will chose one lucky commenter to be featured as our Blog of the Week and that blogger will get a link to their blog, and a spot on our blog roll for the week.

I’ve been doing a lot of promotion on digg, and I would love to hear your opinion on it. Have you been on the front page? What is the most amount of diggs you have received? Do you even bother getting dugg?!

If you have a minute, please digg our latest article about alexa. I’m hoping to make the front page on this article, so please help us out, and give it a digg.

This is the first time I’ve commented on a comment Friday. Hope I offer what it is that you are looking for.

My thoughts re: Digg: Are social news sites a new act of journalism?

I am a journalist — but I am also a “top digger” — and now I am a netscape navigator. At first I thought submitting stories to digg as a journalist put me in a bit of a conflict of interests. I wrote about that for Colubmia Journalism Review here: http://www.cjr.org/on_the_job/digg_this.php

Today I work mostly online — I am a journalist, but I rarely write anything. I manage a citizen journalism network, I consult on new media, I submit stories for Netscape — the only real writing I do is on my personal blog.

But I still feel very active as a journalist — and believe it or not, submitting stories to social news sites feels like an act of journalism — albiet a watered down one. It’s the easiest and fastest way to engage in the news.

People complain that young people aren’t engaged in the news. I point to Digg or Netscape, Newsvine, etc — how more engaged can you be? They are voting on what they think is the most important — picking and choosing what they want their peers to read.

      More thoughts here.

      Hope all is well.

      Well,

This is my first Comment Friday. Here are a few quick tips for blog authors who are striving for success:

Be The Leader – if you run a blog, be a leader in your pack. Know what you talking about and be comfortable in your area of expertise. The Internet is a source for finding information. If you have information to share, blog about it and present yourself with excellence.
Re-invent Your Own Wheel – Meaning instead of writing a blog post about the latest WordPress version update (which will be covered by hundreds of other blogs) re-write an article you posted a few months ago. Many bloggers hunt for things to write about. Dig in your own archives for topics to rehash.
Google Isn’t Everything – My success hasn’t been because of Google. My success has been delivered by the powers of social networking and making appearances in as many places as possible. Many people think that the Internet is the easy way out from having to work hard. Running your own blog(s) in attempt to find success making money online causes you to work ten times harder than the average blue collar worker and four times longer. I put in 12 to 16 hour days everyday, 7 days a week chasing that rainbow… but everyday I get closer and today my house payment, car payment and all utilities are covered every month from my efforts.
Be A Positive Influence – Who likes a complainer? People are attracted to happy and outgoing people. Crowds don’t like to be pulled down into your personal hell. For that reason, I don’t know why there are so many rants and raves blogs. Inspire, motive and influence… be strong be positive and be a leader.

I find that the Digg community can be very mean some days. I respect trying to maintain a level of quality but sometimes they are just plain obnoxious.

“Just leave us a comment about anything you want…”

Well, if it’s okay to do so, I’d like to drop a shameless plug for last night’s adventure. (Ok, get your mind out of the gutter, folks!) A buddy & I painted the brake calipers on my wife’s VW New Beetle Convertible – a.k.a. Caliente.

      Here’s a photo & more info on the caliper-painting.

I think that Digg prefers very technical stories because a whole bunch of friends are digging stories for each other. I have found that most of the big digg stories aren’t particularly special to me, so I don’t use it much.

Oh man ya’ll get up early. lol Okay I’ve been up since 5 a.m. but kids decided to join me. It’s summer break don’t kids sleep in?

Digg- I’ve recently tried using this again. I just can’t seem to get a break with it. I don’t use it much but like Jen said because the TOP articles don’t get my attention. I tend to flock to sections that aren’t popular like Moms, some techy stuff and celebrities. I have recently started the Friends thing on there but still trying to figure it all out.

Oh movies…have ya seen any new ones? (hey I ask every friday) Last weekend I saw Pirates 3 and yesterday I watched Ghost Rider…both I recommend.

Hey guys. I browse Digg, and sometimes will dig a post that I really, well, dig (I’m dating myself with that word used in that context!) I have never tried to bury anything though.

At any rate, I too find the stuff on Digg tends to run very technical, and for some posts I like that. But occasionally I’d like to just see the most interesting of the other posts on the web too.

Oh, yeah, and my CF (number 8 already?) is up at Love All Books!

Get on over there and take a look, and have a great Friday!

Do you guys ever sleep? This is the earliest I’ve gotten here and man there’s already 5 comments! I guess that’s a good thing..

I just skim through the technology category once in a while to see if there is anything interesting going on since that is what my blog is about but I hardly Digg anymore!

Well K-IntheHouse, I guess people are from different time zones, that’s why some people are ‘up early’.

Don’t know much about digg. But it sounds like something that I may not be interested in. Anyway, have a good weekend (and it’s rain like hell already today here in the UK).

I’ve dug a few things…I once tried a promotion like this, I got 25 comments, and 1 digg.

It was lame. I still have the link up on my site. No one cares about it though, since my blog isn’t about making money online or anything.

Off topic: I’m ready for an exciting weekend at the College World Series and it sounds like the weather couldn’t be better. Cheers all!

I’m not too fond of digg, I do have the option for people to digg my entries if they’d want. But I don’t really put in any effort of doing so myself. Usually unless you got some nice little friends over on digg you won’t reach anything with it anyways, people will simply pass on by and that’s it.

Quite a lot of communities I’ve seen online exchange digg clicks and such or offer other services for digg clicks (heck it are like digg prostitutes :P), but I can totally understand it. Although totally against the ToS of Digg, it’s just the only way to stand a real chance if you don’t have a load of friends around on digg already anyways which pretty much do the same, not digg the article because it’s so great but simply for the author.

I think Digg promotion is nice, however Digg brings a lot of traffic but in my experiences many people’s web hosts are not simply equipped if they get the traffic. Thus causing the “digg effect”.

Hi there – I have a blogging question. I’m very friendly and personable and my life is mostly an open book…so how much of my life should be in my business blog?

My office is in my home, so it’s not a matter of separating work from home. They’re not in different places physically, should they be in different places mentally?

Currently I don’t write about anything personal unless it can be made into a business story…but I’m thinking in this age of blogging and everyone having something to say, should my niche be SO small as to only be people that are interested in what I have to say?

      Would love to hear opinions!

Whoops! By “interested in what I have to say” I mean in ALL areas of life…not just business. Of course people are interested in the business stuff or I wouldn’t get traffic *grin*
