The Benefits of Comment Friday

I’m really late with Comment Friday, so I thought I’d do something a little different. I wanted to write about Comment Friday and the benefits of it.

For those who don’t know what it is, it’s pretty simple. On fridays I post a random question or thought about something. I ask the visitors of our blog to give their opinion on that, or really anything they want to. For that, I will reward a random person who comments a prize. At first it was a blogroll spot for a week. I’ve since increased that prize to a link and 100 entrecard credits.

Why Comment Friday?

Meme’s and blogger surveys are popular for some bloggers. By participating in these things you can get more links, comments, etc. I thought, why not make my own? So I did.

Some blogs have a schedule where they post ‘link love’ or different things on a weekly basis. We also do that with our Sunday Contest Roundups. I chose friday for comment day.

The comment friday concept is a year old now, with our first comment friday on Jan 28th, 2007. This has since increased comments and feedback throughout the blog.

Being Unique

There are several things similar to a Comment Friday, but this is something that I thought up myself. I didn’t take the idea from anyone, however since starting this I have seen several blogs do similar things.

Comment Friday Results

Almost every friday for the past year we’ve had comment friday. It started slow, but got fire. One friday had 45 comments. It’s not a lot for some bloggers, but keep in mind that I don’t respond to every comment each one to inflate the count.

I mentioned it has increased comments throughout the blog. Our current stats are:

There are currently 689 posts and 4,738 comments.

That works out to be almost 7 comments per post. If you don’t include the posts that we lost our comments on (blogspot move didn’t include comments) that number is even higher.

Have you implemented any unique method on your blog?

For this post the comment friday is still in effect. One person will receive a blogroll link for a week and 100 credits!

This is a really interesting idea. I have been struggling to think of ways to include my readers more… To get them to interact and give feedback.

I will be curious to see how it goes for you.

Why yes, I have implemented something unique on my blog. I have a Words To Know contest. I have a page with vocabulary words. Then when I run the Words To Know contest post whoever leaves a comment using at least 4 of the words is eligible for a drawing for 20$ via PayPal.

This is actually going on right now. I’m on Words To Know version 4. I have one of these every month or two. It’s unique and I get some fun comments some times.

I would like this to remain a regular feature on my blog. And as I get more popular I’ll probably increase the prize. As usual I enjoy your comment fridays. Emma

I have “Three Things Thursday” and “Rubbish Commenters”. There the two main ones, and generate a bunch of hits.

I have had Sukosaki Scene It! which was a posted movie scene and then readers comment on what movie they think it from.

I have been thinking about getting back into it, but I am not blogging about movies, so I didn’t want that to be off topic.

      Good idea here though.

      Cool idea, cool concept.

I have put in place a schedule for my entire blog and then I can post randomly around that.

Hopefully this will help me get people to come and read regularly at least once a week.
